How is social media changing human relationships in modern society?

In this blog post, we will examine how social media has changed the way people communicate, its positive role, and the issues we need to be aware of.

Social media is an abbreviation for social network service, which refers to services that allow users to form human networks on the web. It plays a significant role in maintaining relationships between people who would otherwise find it difficult to interact due to geographical or time constraints, while also enabling users to maintain existing relationships and build new connections. Although the term “social media” has only recently gained widespread use, considering that the original purpose of the internet was to facilitate communication with people in distant locations, social media can be seen as an extension of a concept that has existed for a long time. Just as the invention of the wheel led to innovations in transportation and ultimately to the development of the automobile, the wheel can be seen as the equivalent of email, and the automobile as the equivalent of SNS. Although their forms and methods of use are different, they have evolved with the same goal of connecting people. With the advent of the World Wide Web, various portal sites emerged, and with the internet-based venture boom, various forms of online communities and relationship-centered services began to appear. Initially, these were simple platforms centered around bulletin boards and chat rooms, but they gradually evolved into platforms that strengthened direct connections between users. The global popularization of SNS began with the emergence of global platforms such as Facebook and Twitter. Unlike existing communities, these services created networks based on individuals’ daily lives, thoughts, and activities, and achieved rapid growth through a technically lighter and more flexible structure.
Twitter, launched in 2006, focused on short text-based communication, allowing users to quickly share messages of up to 140 characters (now expanded to 280 characters), becoming a symbol of real-time communication. It expanded its influence by being used as a promotional tool for politicians during election seasons, for emergency alerts, and as a news reporting tool.
On the other hand, Facebook adopted a personal-centric space called “timeline,” enabling users to share various content such as photos, videos, and text with friends, thereby facilitating broader communication. Through its news feed algorithm, content of interest is automatically displayed to users, and it has also grown significantly as an advertising and marketing platform. In this way, SNS has transcended simple personal communication to create a massive digital ecosystem influencing politics, economics, and culture.
The rapid spread of social media is closely related to the advent of smartphones. Especially after the release of the iPhone in 2007, a mobile-centric environment was established, allowing users to access social media anytime and anywhere. Features such as real-time photo sharing, location-based services, and push notifications significantly improved the usability of social media, making it a natural part of daily life to access social media dozens of times a day.
Meanwhile, social media has gained attention as a tool that makes it easy to manage human relationships that were previously difficult to maintain. It has become possible to reconnect with friends who have lost touch and form networks with people around the world based on common interests. This goes beyond mere “connection” and leads to the creation of new social experiences and opportunities.
For example, LinkedIn, a business networking platform based on social media, is a representative example of how hundreds of millions of professionals around the world share their work experience and portfolios for recruitment, collaboration, and career development. However, social media also has negative aspects.
Above all, the ease with which users’ personal information can be exposed is a major concern. Personal information entered upon registration, such as location data, photos, and posts, can be exposed to others or misused, and users often remain unaware of these risks. In fact, various cybercrimes, including personal information leaks, cyberstalking, unauthorized distribution of images, defamation, and the spread of false information, occur through social media, becoming significant social issues.
Additionally, SNS can serve as a channel for the spread of fake news or false information. Due to the structure where algorithms filter and provide information tailored to users’ interests, users may only be exposed to information aligned with their own perspectives, leading to phenomena such as the “filter bubble” or “confirmation bias.” Some political forces and organizations have exploited this structure to manipulate public opinion or incite unrest. Meanwhile, irresponsible posts by celebrities and other public figures have sparked social controversy, and there have been numerous cases of companies and government agencies failing to respond appropriately to crises on social media.
Despite this, social media remains one of the most influential communication tools in the world. It is evolving by integrating various forms of content such as text, images, and videos, enabling real-time interaction, and gradually combining with technologies such as virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), and artificial intelligence (AI). Recently, specialized social media platforms such as the metaverse-type platform led by Meta (formerly Facebook), short-video-centric TikTok, photo-centric Instagram, and audio-based Clubhouse are gaining attention.
Ultimately, SNS is the result of implementing human social instincts in a digital space. New forms of social platforms continue to emerge, and their influence is expanding. SNS has transcended its role as a mere communication tool, becoming a core pillar of personal identity expression, social participation, information consumption and production, and economic activity. It is essential to monitor how SNS will evolve in the future digital society and the impact it will have on our society.
