Is a Campaign Needed to Address Social Media Issues?

In this blog post, I’d like to discuss the various problems caused by social media and the need for campaigns to address them.

Problems Created by Social Media

SNS stands for Social Networking System, referring to online services that facilitate social connections through free communication and information sharing among users. With the widespread adoption of various platforms such as KakaoTalk, Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram, nearly everyone uses at least one of these services. While this convenience and widespread adoption have undoubtedly brought positive changes, there are also many side effects that cannot be ignored.
First, the issue of privacy infringement is serious. A past survey reported that approximately 32.6% of users had experienced a breach of their personal information or privacy; since social media usage has become far more widespread since that survey was conducted, the current scale of the problem may be even greater. When posts, location data, or photos that people voluntarily share are misused, it can easily lead to privacy violations.
A prime example is a website that once existed called “Please Rob Me (pleaserobme.com).” Concerns were raised that such sites allowed criminals to track when a user’s home was empty based solely on publicly available location data or posts, potentially leading to actual crimes. This is a classic example of information voluntarily disclosed by users being misused, rather than illegal hacking.
Another serious issue is the rapid spread of misinformation. Due to the structure of social media, where posts can be shared quickly with a single click, false claims or fabricated facts can spread in an instant. The more sensational or inflammatory the content, the greater its speed of dissemination and influence, which can lead to social chaos. For example, there was a case where a false post about a local restaurant spread, causing the business’s sales to plummet and eventually forcing it to close. The damage caused by false information is not easily repaired, even if the truth is later revealed.

The Benefits of Social Media and the Need for Campaigns

On the other hand, many people emphasize the positive aspects of social media. Social media has expanded freedom of expression and played a significant role in bringing to light abuses of power and social issues. Unlike in the past when media control was strict, anyone can now easily share instances of injustice or corruption, and there are numerous cases where this has exposed misconduct and led to social reform.
It also has the advantage of helping maintain relationships by making it easy to exchange news with distant family members or old friends. In the midst of busy daily lives, it also serves to maintain connections that might otherwise be severed, even if only through simple exchanges of greetings.
However, these benefits of freedom of expression and connection can simultaneously give rise to problems. As information spreads widely, facts can be exaggerated or distorted, and when sources are unclear, it becomes easy for false information to be spread under the guise of anonymity, leading to malicious comments and collective harm. Furthermore, there is criticism that fragmented communication on social media can actually lead to neglect of face-to-face interactions and relationships in the real world. In fact, the tendency to focus solely on smartphone screens even when in the same physical space is frequently cited as an example of how human relationships are weakened.
Taking these points into consideration, it is impossible to unconditionally view social media as either entirely positive or entirely negative. It is a natural conclusion that while acknowledging its positive functions, social efforts are needed to mitigate its side effects. Therefore, various programs must be established, such as privacy protection education, strengthening systems to counter misinformation, enhancing platform accountability, and public campaigns to improve digital literacy. Campaigns that go beyond simple warning messages to improve user awareness and provide concrete guidelines for action will be effective.
In short, while social media is a revolutionary tool, it also carries inherent responsibilities and risks. To address issues such as privacy breaches, the spread of misinformation, and the superficiality of human relationships, active campaigns and institutional improvements involving users, companies, and society are necessary. Such efforts represent a wise approach to using social media in a safer and more wholesome manner.
