The Impact of Addiction on Our Judgment and the Importance of Changing Our Perceptions

In this blog post, we will examine how various types of addiction influence our judgment and discuss the importance of changing our perceptions beyond the usual frames of reference.

We live in a world filled with various forms of “addiction.” From work addiction to social media platforms like Twitter and Facebook, and even a book that describes South Koreans’ eating habits as “salt addiction,” we are surrounded by the concept of addiction. This addiction is not merely an individual issue but has a significant impact on society as a whole. In modern society, the objects of addiction are becoming increasingly diverse, and their influence is growing. However, it is worth considering whether the addictions we encounter in our daily lives are factors that prevent us from making proper judgments.
First, let’s consider the frame provided by the word “addiction.” Looking up the dictionary definition of “addiction,” we find it defined as “a condition in which an organism experiences functional impairment due to the toxicity of food or drugs,” “a pathological state in which one cannot endure without excessive consumption of alcohol or drugs,” and “a state in which one is so immersed in an idea or object that one cannot judge things normally.” The meaning of addiction used today is likely the second or third definition. Considering that both of these meanings share similarities with the first definition, the object of addiction inevitably gives the impression of being something negative, like a toxin. Additionally, it suggests that the person addicted is not normal. This is the frame inherent in the word “addiction.”
This frame can lead us to make incorrect judgments about people, objects, or phenomena. For example, consider “drug addiction” and “game addiction.” While drugs certainly pose a risk of addiction, this is only true when they are not used properly. In fact, drugs’ ability to interact with the nervous system can be utilized in various ways, such as for pain relief. However, due to the negative perceptions formed through various cases of drug addiction, would we be able to make a proper judgment when first encountering the fact that drugs with addictive properties are used as painkillers? It is difficult if we focus too much on the impression of addiction. The same applies to game addiction. If we focus on the fact that games are objects with addictive potential, we may fail to properly assess their positive functions or the potential of the gaming industry. In particular, we may overlook the fact that games can be used as educational tools. In fact, many education experts argue that games can help students develop problem-solving skills and teamwork. However, many overlook these positive aspects when trapped in the addiction framework.
Next, there is the framing of the addictive object. Once we learn that a student named A is addicted to games, our judgment of A will inevitably be negative, and we will not easily acknowledge any positive aspects of A. Furthermore, we must be cautious because the frame surrounding the addictive object can be exploited. If someone wants to leave a negative impression of another person, they can easily achieve their goal by using the term “addiction” to describe something that person is involved in. Therefore, it is important to be aware of the existence of frames.
This addiction frame is particularly effective when the object is unfamiliar. When we hear the term “salt addiction,” we do not immediately form a negative opinion of salt. This is because we know that salt contains nutrients that are necessary for our lives, making it difficult for a negative frame to take hold. Similarly, when we hear the term “alcohol addiction,” we do not immediately question our existing beliefs because we understand the characteristics of alcohol and how it can be used positively. On the other hand, if someone who knows little about games hears the term “game addiction,” the frame will work effectively. The same applies to the case of Student A. If we already knew a lot about A, the frame would not have a significant impact.
Meanwhile, our perception of addiction needs to evolve alongside social changes. For example, while smoking was once socially acceptable, it is now viewed negatively due to increased awareness of health issues. Similarly, perceptions of addiction can also change. If we understand the various aspects of addiction and find appropriate ways to address it, we can overcome the negative frame associated with addiction. To achieve this, education and awareness about addiction are essential. It is important to balance the discussion of the risks of addiction with the positive aspects of the things that can lead to addiction.
Ultimately, if the word “addiction” does not disappear from society, what must change is our attitude toward it. Since subjective opinions are involved in the everyday use of the word “addiction,” it is impossible to judge whether its use is right or wrong. Therefore, our attitude toward addiction is important. When forming your own perspective on an unfamiliar subject, do not be swayed by the word “addiction.” Instead, be aware of the frame that the word creates and make judgments based on credible information and arguments. By removing the “addiction” lens and looking at the subject again, you can make better judgments. Why not try to break free from the addiction frame?
Finally, there needs to be more social discussion about addiction. It is important to recognize that addiction is not simply an individual problem but a phenomenon that affects society as a whole, and that various approaches are needed to solve it. Examples include addiction prevention programs, strengthening counseling and treatment systems for addiction, and providing accurate information about addiction. Through such efforts, we can move beyond the addiction frame and build a healthier society.
