This blog post examines how effective IPL treatment is for various skin concerns like pigmentation disorders, fine wrinkles, and pore issues.
How IPL Treatment Works
IPL stands for Intense Pulsed Light and, to be precise, is not a laser. While conventional lasers amplify only a specific single wavelength of light to target a particular therapeutic effect, IPL uses special filters to emit a broad spectrum of light across a continuous wavelength range from 500nm to 1,400nm in strong pulses, achieving diverse therapeutic effects.
IPL Treatment Process
Before Treatment: Pigmented conditions like blemishes or freckles are visible on the skin’s surface. Dilated capillaries make red blood vessels visible to the naked eye, and enlarged pores and fine wrinkles give the skin an aged appearance.
During Treatment: When exposed to IPL’s diverse wavelengths, melanin pigment (the cause of brown spots) and hemoglobin particles (the cause of red blood vessels) absorb the IPL light energy, while the surrounding skin tissue remains undamaged.
After treatment: Hemoglobin and melanin that absorbed the IPL light energy break down into fine particles and are naturally absorbed and eliminated by the body. Consequently, pigmentary conditions like blemishes and freckles, as well as vascular conditions, improve. Longer wavelength energy stimulates collagen synthesis in dermal cells, increasing skin elasticity.
Four Factors Affecting IPL Treatment Effectiveness
1. Light wavelength
2. Skin color
3. Light exposure time
4. IPL light energy intensity
It is more effective on fair skin; other factors may vary depending on the dermatologist’s experience and the patient’s condition.
IPL Treatment Method
1. Unlike conventional lasers, IPL is typically administered 3-5 times at 2-3 week intervals.
2. A minimum of 3 sessions is required to achieve sufficient results.
3. Even after a single session, melasma, freckles, and blemishes gradually fade, and effects are visible on reddened blood vessels.
4. For full-face treatment, applying anesthetic cream for about 30 minutes followed by a 10-minute IPL session, combined with cold compresses, regenerative laser therapy, and a special mask, yields better results.
5. If needed, treatment can be limited to specific areas (under the eyes, nose, around the eyes, etc.), reducing the time required.
IPL Treatment Effects
1. Pigmentation: IPL can treat freckles and age spots without disrupting daily life. For melasma, using a lower light energy setting reduces side effects, and a minimum of 3 treatments per year may be necessary. In the past, treating melasma with Q-switched lasers often resulted in darkening of the pigmentation. However, IPL does not stimulate melanocytes, making it useful for melasma treatment. Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, which was difficult to treat with conventional lasers, can also be treated with IPL.
2. Vascular Conditions: IPL is also effective for inflammatory conditions centered on the face that involve vascular dilation, such as facial flushing, telangiectasia, and rosacea. IPL uses wavelengths over twice as long as conventional vascular lasers, penetrating deeper into the skin, making it useful for treating dark circles. Dark circles vary significantly between individuals, and 5-6 or more sessions are recommended. IPL also has the advantage of causing no bruising or skin damage.
3. Fine Lines and Pores: IPL’s overall skin effect is known as ‘photo-rejuvenation’. It stimulates collagen synthesis, rejuvenating aged skin, narrowing pores, and improving fine lines.
4. Acne-Prone Skin: Specific wavelengths in IPL can reduce acne bacteria by up to 80%. While IPL isn’t established as a primary acne treatment, it’s a worthwhile option to consider consistently if other treatments haven’t been effective.
5. Hair Removal: Another major benefit of IPL is hair removal. The procedure is quick, relatively painless, and highly effective.
Precautions for IPL Treatment
1. Avoid excessive sun exposure before and after IPL treatment. Pay particular attention to UV rays; avoid tanning. If UV exposure is unavoidable, use sunscreen and whitening cream, and consider combining with vitamin C iontophoresis therapy.
2. IPL does not resolve all issues with a single treatment. Consult a dermatologist to determine the necessary procedures. Since IPL delays skin aging and has rejuvenating effects, consistent treatment is crucial.
3. After IPL treatment, noticeable effects may appear initially, but improvement can slow down later. Persisting with treatments at 2-3 week intervals is beneficial during this phase.
4. Redness may persist for about half a day after treatment but will subside naturally over time. Minor scabbing may occur, but it typically resolves naturally within one week.
5. Washing your face and applying makeup are possible immediately after treatment. However, it is advisable to avoid excessive alcohol consumption and high-temperature environments like saunas for 3-5 days.
